What is a Dental Implant?
If one or more of your teeth has fallen out, your dentist might suggest you get a dental implant. While other options for repairing or replacing single or multiple teeth are available, none have proven to be as successful as the dental implant (which has an approximate success rate of 95%). Many experts proclaim dental implants are "the future of dentistry", but what exactly is a dental implant and how does it work?
A dental implant is a titanium replacement for your tooth root. People lose teeth for all sorts of reasons – accidents, tooth decay, root canal failure – and if the tooth isn't replaced, more teeth could be lost.
The titanium dental implant sits inside the cavity left by a tooth root, and a prosthetic crown sits atop the titanium thread, molded to resemble an actual tooth.
Dental implant technology can also be used to support a dental bridge replacing multiple missing teeth. People needing upper or lower dentures find securing the denture with implants increases stability and comfort.
While traditional dentures and bridgework requires neighboring teeth to be ground down to support the structure, dental implants integrate with the jaw bone and don't require the destruction of other teeth for their support. With a dental implant, you never worry about your jawbone deteriorating – a common problem with dental bridges (the other treatment for missing teeth).
What can I expect from a single-tooth implant?
When considering whether to opt for a dental implant, you'll want to know what to expect from the surgery. The procedure for installing a single-tooth dental implant takes around five months to complete. However, in some cases – especially when bone needs to be built up in the jawbone first – the complete procedure can take a year or more.
Your implant will proceed in three stages:
Stage One: Consultation
At your initial consultation, your chosen dental professional (either a periodontist or a dental surgeon qualified in dental implant procedures) will take x-rays of your mouth and conduct a full examination of your teeth and surrounding jawbone. You'll be informed of any measures you need to take to prepare for the surgery.
Stage Two: Surgery
During the surgery, the dentist makes an incision in the jawbone around the area where your tooth was, and inserts the titanium 'screw' implant. You will be under local or general anesthetic and will feel no pain, although expect to be somewhat uncomfortable.
Stage Three: Osseointegration
Your dental surgeon will allow between five to seven months for the bone to bond with the titanium dental implant screw – this is called osseointegration. After this period, your dental surgeon removes the temporary cap and replaces it with a permanent crown (made of a porcelain/metal alloy or a metal such as gold). Your dental tooth implant is complete!
Within a short amount of time you will be able to smile, speak and chew as though your implant was a natural tooth. You'll need to take good care of your implant by brushing and flossing regularly, and visit your dental surgeon or periodontist at least once a year for a check-up.
