Full Dentures & Partial Dentures
Full Dentures & Partial DenturesYou may need partial dentures or full dentures. Dentures are removable. They are an appliance used to replace missing teeth and the tissue that surrounded them. The are created in a way that looks very much like your own teeth. In fact, they will probably improve your smile. You can choose from two kinds of dentures: partial or complete. A whole set of dentures are used when someone doesn't have any teeth at all, but a partial set of dentures are used when someone still has some of their real teeth left. Partial dentures prevent other teeth from shifting and fill in the spaces caused by missing teeth.
A whole set of dentures might be conventional or immediate. Conventional means that the dentures are created after the teeth have been taken out and the gums have recovered, approximately four to six weeks. The patient will not have teeth during this time. Immediate dentures are pre-made. They are fitted as soon as the teeth are pulled. In this way, the patient does not have to go toothless while recovering. When the tissues have healed and shrunken, it will be necessary to make adjustments. Your dentures should last for a long time; however, they may need to be readjusted, remade, and repaired occasionally. With proper care, good dentures can give you years of service. Be sure to keep them properly maintained, adjusted, and in good repair. They may even need to be remade from time to time.
What is the procedure for getting dentures? When you get dentures, you must go to a series of appointments during a period of several weeks. When your dentures are created, very accurate impressions or molds of your teeth will be used. Additionally, the lab technicians will be working with very accurate measurements of your mouth and teeth. You may need to go to several appointments to try your custom denture. This will help to attain correct fit, color and shape. Finally, your dentist will make sure your new dentures fit naturally and comfortably by making precise adjustments to the completed dentures and placing them properly. Common symptoms include greater flow of saliva, a measure of soreness, and some difficulty with chewing and speaking. These symptoms are usually temporary. When you tissues and muscles are used to the new dentures, they will subside.
